The 2023 Vegnese Grand Prix, officially presented as the Formula Micras North Star Cruises Vegnese Grand Prix 2023, is a Formula Micras World Championship race that was held on 7 May 2023 at the Cossa Street Circuit, a motor racing circuit in the city of Cossa, Vegno. It served as the opening race of the 2023 Formula Micras World Championship.

Background

The drivers and teams were the same as the season entry list.

The Vegnese GP was, for the second year in a row, the first inaugural race of the 2023 season, the second-ever season of Formula Micras. The race therefore took place in the home country of the Sburo Deliziosa FM Team and represented the home Grand Prix for the driver Michele Spettacolo, the only Vegnese driver of the grid.

The 2022 edition saw the triumph of Harwic Gywion, with Samira Khan and George Hunt on the podium.

Tyre Choices

The two tyre manufacturers (Bouncy Rings and Vitesse) brought for this Grand Prix three choices of compounds for the teams: SuperSoft (SS), Soft (S) and Medium (M).

Practice Session

The practice session was held at the Grand Prix lasting an hour in length; it was scheduled on 5 May 2023, and started at 15:00 local time, having the following situation:

Qualifying

As clarified by the regulations, the qualifying session took place on 6 May 2023, with a 3-manche sessions: the 15 fastest drivers had access to Q2, then the 10 fastest acceded to Q3, where they fought for pole-position.

Race

Report

Trent Cooper had a good start from pole position and firmly held the lead, as did George Hunt and Samira Khan who followed in second and third position. On the other hand, the start of Kransk was disastrous, and after the first lap he finds himself in eighth position, after having started in third place. Around the 15th lap the first pit stops begin for some of the drivers who started on supersoft tyres, in particular Ben Lloyd and Soma opt for a very aggressive strategy, stopping very early and putting on soft tyres, which however will turn against them at the end of the race, forcing them to a pit in the last few laps due to too much wear.

The first of the drivers in front to stop was George Hunt, who put on the soft tire and tries an undercut on Cooper, who however was quite far ahead and stopping the next lap still gets back in front of the Senyan driver. Samira Khan instead opts to lengthen the first stint on SuperSoft as much as possible to have a better tire in the final stages of the race, hoping for more wear than Hunt, which actually happens: in fact, on lap 26 Hunt is forced to manage his tires a lot and Khan passes him without too much trouble.

Around lap 30 the pit stops arrive for the riders who started with medium tires (the hardest compounds brought here to Vegno) who, mounting Soft or even Supersoft compounds, manage to make up a lot of ground on those who started on Supersoft and now on harder hard and worn. In fact, both Hairul Syazwan and Hitoshi Jeromiah Yakuzaki took advantage of the new tires to overtake Spettacolo and Personempresario who were clearly struggling, while Lloyd and Soma were forced to make a second stop a few laps from the end, ending up in the last positions of the standings.

Cooper wins the race, achieving a historic hat-trick: victory, fastest lap and pole position, bringing home a full haul of points from Vegno: 29. Khan arrives in second position, 24 seconds behind the leader, while Hunt completes the podium, 5 seconds behind the runner-up. Historical points at their first-ever race in FM for Hitoshi Jeromiah Yakuzaki and Hairul Syazwan.
