The White Room is a specialised facility and interrogation methodology housed within the Humanist Institute of Thought Reform in Merensk. Operating under the charter of the Benacian Academy, the facility is dedicated to the psychological dismantling and reconstruction of high-value subjects, such as foreign diplomats and internationally prominent dissidents, without the infliction of permanent physical damage that might diminish their utility to the Nationalist & Humanist Party.
Methodology
The White Room doctrine is predicated on the N&H ideological tenet that the "self" is a chaotic construct that must be ordered by the State. The process aims to induce a state of "psychological tabula rasa" (blank slate), allowing for the re-inscription of loyalty to the Benacian Union.
Sensory Erasure
The facility consists of soundproofed, monochromatic chambers where the ambient temperature is regulated to match human skin temperature, eliminating thermal feedback. Subjects are deprived of all external stimuli:
- Visual: The environment is uniformly white, preventing the eye from fixing on any horizon or detail.
- Auditory: Acoustic dampening eliminates all external noise, amplifying the subject's internal physiological sounds (heartbeat, respiration) to induce disorientation.
- Temporal: The absence of natural light or mechanical timekeeping dissolves the subject's circadian rhythm, fostering a dependence on the captor for temporal grounding.
The Monitor
Once the subject reaches the threshold of "stimulus hunger," a Monitor is introduced. Trained in the specific arts of "cold reading" and "emotional intelligence", the Monitor provides the sole source of sensory input (colour, voice, scent). By controlling the reintroduction of reality, the Monitor positions the Party not as a jailer, but as the creator of the subject's world, effectively recalibrating the subject's "piety" or "inward-dwelling drive for individual obedience".
Institutional Oversight
While the facility is located in Merensk, it operates in close coordination with the Benacian Academy's School of Medicine in Chryse.
- Chamber of the Anatomists: Provides consultation on the physiological limits of isolation to prevent organ failure or unintended catatonia.
- Chamber of the Physicians: Oversees the nutritional and pharmacological regime of subjects undergoing recalibration.
- Chamber of the Logicians: Assists in the restructuring of the subject's worldview to align with the "Harmonious Society".
Staffing
The monitoring staff of the White Room are exclusively female, primarily drawn from the graduates of the Bothan Institute, given rank in the Humanist Vanguard and cover identities as officers of the Women's Auxiliary Service.
- Selection: Candidates are selected from graduates who have demonstrated exceptional aptitude in "cold reading of human character" and the manipulation of "motivations and desires".
- Role: These operatives apply their training in etiquette and psychological manipulation to assume the role of the "benevolent authority," exploiting the subject's "anxiety, insecurity, or greed" to forge a new bond of dependency.
