The Regent of Natopia (historically also known as Viceroy of Natopia) is a constitutional office within the Bovic Empire of the Natopian Nation responsible for exercising imperial powers during periods of monarchical absence or incapacity. Under the Constitution of Natopia, the Empress must appoint a Regent capable of fulfilling all critical responsibilities of the sovereign during any absence exceeding three continuous Norton months. The Regent serves as a member of the Imperial Court of Natopia and acts as the deputy to the Empress, assuming imperial powers during declared absences. The Regent may be directed by the Empress to perform Imperial duties in their name at any time, though the Regent may not, under any circumstance, issue or amend the Instrument of Succession. If the Imperial Sovereign is under the Bovic Age of Accountability (8 Natopian years), the Regent fulfills Imperial duties until the minor sovereign's eighth birthday. Should no Regent be appointed or the Regent be unable to serve, the Frenzy shall appoint a Regent from among the Princes and Princesses of the Empire, or failing that, from among the citizenry.
