The Ranentsi Autonomous Region (Ranentsian Раненцска Автономна Област, Ranenska Avtonomna Oblast) is an autonomous region of Aerla. Created after calls from Ranentsian cultural leaders for greater representation, they were granted areas of their former homeland that fell within the borders of Aerla.

History

The historical homeland of the Ranentsi, between the Hasenol and Ranen Mountains, were home to several different people groups over history, although it remained very sparsely populated. Some time in the late Hatayyian period, local rulers noted a tribe they called the 'Ahl Alhadidia (People of the Iron) had migrated into the valley along the Kyus River. When Hatay collapsed, these people asserted control in the valley. These people coalesced into tribes, collectively known as the Ranentsi, who squabbled with each other and the valleys and found themselves in a constant state of war.

The first Ranentsi state was created in 1618 AN, when several Ranentsi chieftains formed an alliance and created a presidential republic, electing an intellectual from Garlyano named Todor Yordi. The republic, based out of the city of Kyustendil, lasted until 1626 AN when Yordi was overthrown by political rivals. In retaliation, the government dissolved itself and the civilian administration around the country collapsed.

The valley yet again languished in anarchy until Senya established a protectorate over Kyustendil in 1636 AN, owing to close ties between it and Senya during the nation's independence. Over time, this protectorate would expand to the boundaries of the former Republic. The Senyans withdrew from the area in 1667 AN, yet again leaving the valleys without a state. This age of statelessness was known by many Ranentsi as the "Vŭzrast na Skrŭbti" (Age of Sorrows). Outside invaders and internal conflict depopulated many of the big cities and wiped most small towns off the map entirely. The cities of Kyustendil and Garlyano remained the only safehavens for those who wanted to escape these conflicts.

The Autonomous Region

When Aerla declared its independence in 1709 AN and began expanding west, they came into contact a Ranentsi delegation led by Stefan Yankov, the mayor of Kyustendil. He urged Aerla to establish a protectorate over the Ran Valley. After negotiations, a formal Autonomous Government was established. Over the coming years, the region would expand to most of its former territories.

A controversy between the Aerlan Government and the Autonomous Region occurred in 1711 AN when the Grand Army of Aerla occupied the former Ranentsi town of Kriva. The city, depopulated during the years of war and anarchy, was directly annexed into Aerla and not handed over to the RAO. However, the city council of Kriva reserves the right to have one seat reserved for a member of Ranentsi ethnicity.

The 1730 general elections, the National Assembly of Aerla saw 3 members elected from the Ranentsian Independence Party. The party began to advocate for a renewed Ranentsian Independence from Aerla.
