Qaristan, officially the Islamic Republic of Qaristan, is a landlocked and largely unrecognised state in northern Mataba, on the north-western fringe of Daau in southeast Eura. It is the successor polity of the de-facto emirate raised by the Wilayat Qaristan during the Qaristani Independence Conflict (also called the Second Matabese Civil War). The name is taken from the Qaris Jamid Mosque in Reezal Ain, the religious centre of the northern Matabese Islamic faithful.
Daau recognised Qaristan as an independent landlocked state under the Treaty of Bingkok (1758 AN), with formal standing restated in 1760 AN. Recognition outside the Dauian system remains thin. The state holds the inland ground it occupied at ceasefire: Basagrande, Tuh Payah, Pafle District, Pulau Pahmer and Bingkok. Daau retained Inner Mataba, Jaran Besor and Pulau Ringgang. The Pafle Tunnel is the principal crossing; walls stand on the Gunung Hajelu.
The government is a unitary totalitarian theocratic Islamic emirate. Supreme Leader Hameed Al Shukuur is head of state. Mohammad Shahari, formerly of the Basagrande Youth Wing, serves as Prime Minister. The Wilayat Qaristan is both ruling council and legislature. Shahadat Sulayat remains the central organisational figure of the Wilayat after the treaty settlement.
Etymology
The name Qaristan is derived from the Qaris Jamid Mosque in Reezal Ain, the village whose raid by the Royal Mataba Corps in 1748.5 AN opened the independence war. In local usage the suffix -stan marks the land claimed by the congregation and by the Wilayat that grew around it. The official motto, Də Qaristan Islāmi Imārat ("The Islamic Emirate of Qaristan"), is used on seals and radio IDs even though the external style of the state is "Islamic Republic".
Other names
Foreign and Dauian sources have used Wilayat Qaristan, the Qaristani Emirate, and, pejoratively during the war, the Reezal Ain pocket. Daau's People's National Assembly first condemned the territory as an illegal armed administration rather than a state. After Bingkok the Dauian government accepted the short form Qaristan for border and customs papers.

Geography
Qaristan occupies the inland north of historic Mataba. It does not hold a recognised seacoast. The Gunung Hajelu range and associated ridges separate much of Pafle from the Matabese region and form the fortified line facing Dauian Mataba. The Pafle Tunnel under that line is the ordinary civilian and commercial gate.
The state is assembled from five named holdings:
- Reezal Ain
- Khorramahad
- Haj Bahraj (Basagrande)
- Sarjan (Tuh Payah)
- Pafle District
- Istanfan (Pulau Pahmer)
- Bingkok
Climate follows the north: hot dry seasons inland, cooler air on the Hajelu slopes. Farmland that survived the burned corridor is thin. Water is taken from mountain catchments and from wells around Khorramahad and Tuh Payah.
Climate
Interior basins run hot for much of the year. The Gunung Hajelu slopes are cooler at night. Rain is seasonal and unreliable; the Wilayat treats cistern repair as a religious as well as a civil duty.

The Wilayat takes heavy interest in sports and has pledged war funds into the development of Qaristani football and basketball. The Qaristani Mountain League is the nation's premier semi-professional football league, while the Qaristani Basketball League is the sole amateur basketball competition.
