The Principality Vinandy is a lordship in the Kingdom of Batavia. The territory also includes the Barony Ammerswoude and on the Loet, Barony Bergkirche, County Dasburgh and Lordship Paravel. With the exception of the Lordship Paravel, the principality is located in the former region (Batavian: gewest) of Ingelheim.
Until 1669 AN the lordship was a county. The first count was Bertolf des Vinandy, the formal founder of the House of Vinandy and ancestor of the present king of Batavia, Arkadius Frederik Gustavus des Vinandy.
Composition of the principality
The Barony Ammerswoude and on the Loet is attached to the principality. Not only because of its proximity, but also since the disappearance of the last baron of Ammerswoude, Horatius. The counts of Vinandy, the present prince of Vinandy, preserve the memory of Horatius. The eponymous village of Ammerswoude used to be called Loetbosch, after the small river Loet, which flows through the barony. This town and Slot Ammerswoude are actually copies of the town of Perkouw and Slot Perkouw in the Refobliek. This in an attempt to preserve the cultural development of the village and the castle, as the Refobliek was about to collapse.
The House of Vermeylen was for a long time associated with the barony Bergkirche. Since the death of Gustaaf Vermeylen jr. the title and barony were transferred to the Prince of Vinandy. The town of the same name is situated on the river Selz and owes its city rights to the Counts of Vinandy. Thanks to these city rights, city walls could be built, which often blocked the advance of enemy troops towards the county of Vinandy.
The county Dasburgh arrived at the House of Vinandy through the marriage of Jan van Dasburgh and Theodora van Dasburgh - des Vinandy. The county and its castle of the same name was of strategic importance. Because of this, the castle was attacked many times and changed its flag. Today, the castle has become a ruin, which still towers above the village of Dasburgh and overlooks the river Zwette. The village of Dasburgh is only connected to the principality by a railway line. Because the railway line on the border between the County Bouhernaise and the Duchy Batavorum, a dispute arose over the ownership of the railway line. The king assigned the ownership of the railway to the count of Vinandy, provided the railway remained in operation. By disappointing passengers threatened the survival of the railway, after which it served as a museum railway until this day.
In the beginning of the Fifth Kingdom of Batavia, the House of Vinandy acquired the lordship and château of the same name Paravel. The château was bombed during the stateless period, but a new castle was built on the island by King Arkadius IV. The island is an important historical place because of the round table of Paravel.
