The Moorland Armed Forces are the Army, Navy, and the Air Force of the Kingdom of Moorland. The Forces are supervised by the Moorland Ministry of Defense. The Commander-in-Chief is the reigning Monarch of the Kingdom. Operational command falls under the Chief of the Moorland Armed Forces Headquarters Staff.

Since 1719 AN, the Moorland Armed Forces have contributed to the Banner Group East of Keltia Command.

Following the "Total Strategy" reforms of the late 1730s and the experience of the Rail Wars, the MAF moved away from a small volunteer force to a comprehensive national service model. This structure combines a highly professional permanent cadre with a massive, mobilised citizen reserve, mirroring the industrial and demographic capacity of the Kingdom.

Army

The Army is organised into a dual-tier system: the Conventional Forces (heavy mechanised strike units) and Territorial Forces (regional protection).

Conventional Strike Formations (Professional)

These units serve as the "tip of the spear" and are permanently stationed along the western frontier or at high-readiness bases.

  • Nevermoor Knights (Mechanised Division): The MAF's primary armored fist. Equipped with the indigenous LandFara-8 Armoured Fighting Vehicle. They specialised in conventional manoeuvre warfare.
  • Westmoor Light Infantry (Motorised Division): Specialised in counter-insurgency (COIN) and bush warfare. They were the primary unit used to clear Fuath holdouts during the Rail Wars.
  • Royal Commandos (Special Forces): An elite amphibious and reconnaissance unit, capable of combined arms operations integrated into maritime task forces as well as deep patrols into the Green.

Territorial & Support Formations

  • Newcastle Garrison & Southmoor Garrison: Regional Commands that serve as the administrative backbone for mobilising the National Fyrð during times of war.
  • National Redoubt Garrison: A specialised static defense command tasked with manning the heavy fortifications and "Holy Lance" artillery batteries protecting the core industrial zones.
  • National Fyrð (The Citizen Force): The bulk of the army's combat mass. Composed of citizens who have completed their initial two-year training, they are called up for periodic "camps" and deployments.
  • Aerist Militia / St Joseph's Volunteers: A "Home Guard" system of rural commando units, providing local security for farms, mines, and Trans-Keltian Express rail-heads.

Overseas Units

Air Force

The Moorland Royal Air Force is headquartered in Newcastle-Upon-Eastmoor, where it has its combat and training base located in the city's airport. The Air Force's main objectives are to protect the nation's territorial air space, and to provide logistical support to the Army. A second air base was constructed at St. Joseph's to protect the country's southern tier.

Navy

Following the Wars of the Disinherited the Kingdom secured control of Port Moorland and quickly constructed a naval shipyard, which is where the fleet is now headquartered. By 1727, with the collapse of Ostland, Moorland gained a considerable coastline with several important ports. This allowed the MAF to begin heavy investment in improving the navy. The navy has three main bases, one at Port Moorland, one at Port Neil, and one at Newhaven. Port Neil houses the Naval Submarine Base and strictly produces submarines and trains their crews. In addition to these, the Beelandia colony has a coast guard unit stationed in Bee Haven to patrol the coast of Hypernostria.

Manpower

The Moorland Armed Forces (MAF) are organised according to a "Total Force" doctrine. This model distinguishes between a permanent, career-based Professional Force, which manages both high-readiness combat and the complex bureaucracy of the state, and a mass-mobilised National Fyrd.

Top-Level Manpower Summary

As of the 1752 military estimates, the MAF maintains the following personnel totals:

Explanatory Article: The Professionalisation of Support

The decision to incorporate the Commissariat and Inspectorate into the Professional Force marks a shift in Moorlandic military thought. By treating logistics and oversight as career-track professional roles, the MAF ensures that the "Tail" is as proficient as the "Tooth."

Commissariat

Manned by 95,000 full-time professionals, the Commissariat is responsible for the permanent administration of the Kingdom’s military infrastructure.

  • Sustainment: Professionals manage the complex supply chains linking Nova English Weapons factories to the frontier.
  • Infrastructure: Unlike the Fyrd, who rotate in and out of service, the Commissariat provides a permanent presence in all cantonments, ensuring that barracks and depots are battle-ready at a moment's notice.

Inspectorate

With 40,400 personnel, the Inspectorate serves as the military's "immune system."

  • Training Continuity: Professional instructors ensure that training standards do not lapse between Fyrd intake cycles.
  • Discipline: The Provost Marshal’s office remains a permanent fixture of the legal landscape, ensuring that military justice is administered consistently across all five regions of the Kingdom.

National Fyrd

The 280,000 members of the National Fyrd represent the Kingdom's ultimate deterrent. While the Professional Force manages the "how" of warfare, the Fyrd provides the "weight." In times of conflict, such as the Rail Wars, the Fyrd is mobilised to bolster the 58,500 professional combatants, creating a unified front of over 330,000 fighting men and women.

Equipment

The following inventory represents the mobilized strength of the Kingdom of Moorland. Equipment is sourced from domestic giants Nova English Weapons (Heavy Systems/Aerospace) and LandFara Vehicles Ltd (Logistics/Utility), supplemented by high-end tactical imports from the Mishalan Arsenal via the Raspur Pact.

Small Arms

Standardisation follows a "Tiered Issue" model: Professional units utilize modular N.E.W. systems, while the National Fryd utilizes rugged Benacian battle rifles.

Weapon Type Manufacturer Est. Quantity Notes
M1721 Battle Rifle Service Rifle Mishalan Arsenal 280,000 Standard issue for National Fryd and Reservists.

Industrial Context

  • Strategic Autarky: Moorland produces 75% of its rolling stock and 100% of its heavy armoor via Nova English Weapons and LandFara Vehicles Ltd.
  • Allied Interoperability: By utilising Mishalan Arsenal small arms and IFVs, the MAF ensures that ammunition and parts are cross-compatible with Raspur Pact allies during joint operations in Keltia.

Support Services

The efficacy of the Moorland Armed Forces is predicated on the revised and updated"Total Strategy" of 1752, which separates the "Tooth" (Combat Formations) from the "Tail" (Support Services). The support apparatus is divided into two sovereign administrative bodies: The Commissariat and The Inspectorate.

These services are manned by a dedicated levy of 135,400 personnel, ensuring that combatant forces remain focused exclusively on operational readiness and frontier defence.

The Commissariat

The Commissariat acts as the "industrial lung" of the MAF. In a nation characterised by vast distances and rugged terrain, the Commissariat ensures that no unit—from a Sea Wolf submarine in the Strait of Haifa to a mechanized platoon in Fortria—lacks the requisite materiel to fight.

  • Supply Chain Mastery: The Logistics Department manages the crucial interface between civilian manufacturers like LandFara Vehicles Ltd and the front-line units. They oversee the massive "TKE Military Corridor," ensuring that freight trains prioritising armaments reach the frontier without impeding civilian commerce.
  • Cantonment Life: The Billeting Department is responsible for the administration of the "National Fyrd Centres." These are massive complexes capable of housing and processing 280,000 reservists during a full national mobilisation.
  • The LOC (Lines of Communication): Manned largely by specialised engineers and route guards, this department ensures that the "Lifelines of the Kingdom" remain open. They are tasked with the rapid repair of bridges or rails damaged by weather or hostile action.

The Inspectorate

The Inspectorate is the institutional guardian of Moorlandic military standards. Given the MAF’s heavy reliance on the National Fyrd (reservists), the Inspectorate ensures that the transition from civilian to soldier is marked by rigorous discipline and technical excellence.

  • Doctrine and Training: The TRADOC cadre operates the Kingdom’s "Schoolhouses." They are responsible for translating complex N.E.W. technical manuals into standard operating procedures for the average Fyrdsman.
  • The Provost Marshal: The Military Provost ensures that the MAF remains a professional force. They handle the legal complexities of military justice and act as the civilian population's primary point of contact regarding military conduct in occupied or frontier zones.
  • Standards and Audits: This elite 3,000-man cadre answers directly to the Witan and the Crown. They possess the authority to "freeze" any unit at any time to perform a full readiness audit, ensuring that the taxpayer-funded N.E.W. R-06 tanks and JAS Níedgráp fighters are maintained to peak performance.
