The House of Vilca is a Wechua noble house of the federal nobility of Nouvelle Alexandrie, seated at Parap in the Wechua Nation. It holds the dukedom of Salcedo, which carries a grandeeship of the federation, together with the countship of Choquequirao. The house was founded by Rawa Vilca, the soldier and statesman who rose to be Vice-President of the Government, and its present head is his grandson Huamán Vilca, 3rd Duke of Salcedo.

Among the newer of the Wechua noble houses, the Vilca are counted among the achulla mintasqa, the senior hereditary nobility, by virtue of the grandeeship attached to their dukedom.[1] The house dates from its founder's career rather than from earlier lineage, and it has remained closely identified with the Federal Humanist Party and with the public and charitable life of the Wechua Nation.

Origins

The house takes its name from the Vilca family of Parap, from which its founder Rawa Vilca came. Rawa Vilca was a general and a veteran of the Wechua Spring before he entered politics, and he built a long career first as a leader of Wechua humanism and then in the federal Council of State, culminating in the Vice-Presidency of the Government between 1744 AN and 1749 AN.[2] It was in the course of that career that the family entered the nobility, and the house dates its foundation to his elevation to the dukedom of Salcedo.

In the framework of Wechua nobility, the Vilca belong to the titled peerage rather than to the untitled hatun runa whose standing derives from the leadership of a recognized ayllu. Because a grandeeship in Nouvelle Alexandrie is always attached to a ducal title, the Duke of Salcedo ranks as a Grandee and is styled The Most Excellent Lord.[3]

Titles

The principal title of the house is the dukedom of Salcedo, held with the subsidiary countship of Choquequirao. Both were conferred on the founder, who was styled Count of Choquequirao in his earlier career and was later raised to the dukedom by which he is best known.[4] The titles descend together by the hereditary rules of the federal nobility, registered through the Department of the Interior, and have passed in the direct male line from the founder to the present holder.

The ducal line

Three dukes of Salcedo have held the title. The founder, Rawa Vilca, was succeeded on his death in 1753 AN by his eldest son, Amaru Vilca Rimachi, as 2nd Duke. The second duke held the title only a short time before his own death, and the headship of the house passed to his son, Huamán Vilca, the present and 3rd Duke of Salcedo.

The founder's second son, Tupaq Vilca, did not inherit the title but became a public figure in his own right as Chief Coordinator of the Mountain Solidarity Associations, the network of alpine rescue and mutual-aid societies of the Wechua Nation, continuing the family's association with the public life of the highlands.[5]
