The Federal Space Force of Nouvelle Alexandrie is the space service branch of the Federal Forces of Nouvelle Alexandrie, responsible for the orbital defense of the Federation, the protection of its space assets, and the maintenance of space domain awareness. It is one of the six services of the Federal Forces. The service was established by the Federal Space Force Establishment Act, 1720, and its professional head is the Chief of Staff, who holds the style of Captain General of the Federal Space Force.

History

The Federation's interest in space began with the civilian Aeronautics and Space Administration of Nouvelle Alexandrie, founded in 1694 AN, whose crewed Aurora Station gave Nouvelle Alexandrie an early record in orbital engineering. Military capability followed. The Federal Forces fielded the orbital-detection radars of Project Space Armor from 1701 AN and the Nouvelle Alexandrie Satellite Surveillance System from 1709 AN, and in 1717 AN launched the Nouvelle Alexandrie Orbital Defense Initiative (NAODI) to develop anti-satellite and orbital-defense systems. These were run across the existing commands without a service of their own.

The Federal Space Force was stood up as a service in its own right by the Federal Space Force Establishment Act, 1720, passed by the 6th Cortes Federales under the government of Premier Paolo Antonio Aguilar. The Federation's commitment under the Raspur Pact to help raise an allied orbital defense force, its part in the Planetary Defence Network, and its own growing constellation of orbital assets had made a dedicated service difficult to postpone, and the spread of orbital warfare among the powers of Micras pressed the case. The Theogiorickan incursion of 1721-1722 tested the new service almost at once and, by revealing the Planetary Defence Network in action, settled much of the early argument over whether an orbital-defense force was warranted. The first orbital-defense platforms entered service in 1722 AN, and from 1727 AN the Federal Space Force held full operational control of the assets developed under NAODI.

Through the following decades the service grew alongside the Federation's deepening orbital-defense cooperation with Natopia and the Raspur Pact, including agreements from 1740 AN for shared deep-space monitoring and access to Natopian space technology, and the investments of the Force 1752 initiative. By the 1750s it numbered some 285,000 active personnel.

Mission and organization

The Federal Space Force secures the interests of the Federation in space and defends it against threats arising in or from space. Its tasks include orbital defense, the protection of the Federation's satellites and orbital assets, space domain awareness and early warning, and the operation of the Nouvelle Alexandrie Satellite Surveillance System. It mans the orbital layer of the National Strategic Defense System and the NOVA Shield network, and provides the Federation's contribution to the allied Planetary Defence Network.

The service answers, with the other services of the Federal Forces, to the Secretary of Defense and the Council of State. Its professional head, the Chief of Staff and Captain General of the Federal Space Force, sits on the joint command of the Federal Forces. The service is headquartered at the Federal Space Headquarters, and its operational arm is the Orbital Defense Command.

Equipment

The Federal Space Force operates the orbital-defense systems developed under the Nouvelle Alexandrie Orbital Defense Initiative, among them anti-satellite missiles, electronic jammers, and the Vulcan laser system, together with the orbital-defense platforms it fielded from 1722 AN and the surveillance satellites of the Nouvelle Alexandrie Satellite Surveillance System. Crewed spacecraft entered service from the 1740s. A fuller account of the service's vessels and systems is given in the article on the Federal Forces of Nouvelle Alexandrie.
