Emilia Aabooð Tol (Hurmu Norse pronunciation: /ˈeːmɪlja ˈɒːbuː ˈtʰolː/; Martino pronunciation /eˈmilja ˈobu ˈtol/) is a Hurmu diplomat and lawyer who has served as the first Ambassador of the Order of the Holy Lakes to Uppmanland since 1759. She previously served as consul-general in Walstadt from 1752 until 1759.
Emilia Aabooð Tol belongs to a family with extensive connections to the Hurmu diplomatic service. Her mother, Cristina del Carmen Tol y Anchorena de Lis, is the ambassador to Ioanna, while her brother, Oskar Aabooð Tol, is the ambassador to the Micras Treaty Organization. Her maternal uncle, Juan Carlos Felipe Tol y Anchorena de Lis, serves as ambassador to Craitland.
Early life and education
Emilia Aabooð Tol was born in Kaupang in 1724, the daughter of Magnus Eriksson Aabooð and Cristina del Carmen Tol y Anchorena de Lis. Her father died in 1735 during the Sinking of the Biternion. She was thereafter raised principally in Kaupang by her mother and her mother's partner, Anskar Livlandsbooðar.
Although Aabooð Tol had a strong personal interest in literature, art and cultural history, her mother encouraged her to pursue a more practical profession. She consequently studied law at the University of Huyenkula. While she was a competent legal student, she remained more interested in the cultural and human aspects of public service than in legal scholarship or academic research.
Following her graduation, Aabooð Tol worked as a lawyer at the Secretariat of State for External Relations. Her duties included advising on consular matters, the legal status of Hurmu citizens abroad, and agreements concerning travel and diplomatic representation.
Consul-General in Walstadt
In 1752, Emilia Aabooð Tol was appointed consul-general of the Order of the Holy Lakes in Walstadt. Her appointment coincided with that of her mother as consul-general in Acquecalde. During her seven years in Walstadt, she placed particular emphasis on cultural diplomacy. She organised commemorations, exhibitions, lectures and other activities concerning the shared history of Hurmu and Walstadt. She also worked with local cultural institutions to preserve records and traditions associated with the former personal and dynastic links between the two states. Alongside these activities, the consulate provided assistance to the comparatively large number of Hurmudan tourists visiting Walstadt.
Ambassador to Uppmanland
In early 1759, Aabooð Tol was appointed the first ambassador of the Order of the Holy Lakes to the newly sovereign state of Uppmanland. She was promoted on the same day as her brother Oskar, who was appointed ambassador to the Micras Treaty Organization after previously serving as consul-general in Lausanne, Nouvelle Alexandrie, and her mother, Cristina, who was appointed ambassador to Ioanna.
Uppmanland had previously formed part of the territory administered by the Hexarchy, before the Hexarchican authorities were compelled to evacuate the area in 1757. Its subsequent emergence as an independent state was of immediate strategic importance to Hurmu, as Uppmanland shared a land border with the realm of Amaland.
As the first ambassador, Aabooð Tol was tasked with establishing the Hurmudan diplomatic mission, developing formal relations with the Uppmanland government, and addressing practical questions arising from the newly created international border.
Personal life
Emilia Aabooð Tol married Jason Myksos (of the Shirerithian house of Myksos) in 1749. They have two children: Arsinoë, born in 1752, and Bellerophon, born in 1755.
Aabooð Tol is generally regarded as a warm and empathetic diplomat. Unlike several members of her family, she has shown little interest in academic research or political theory, preferring practical consular work, cultural exchange and direct engagement with the people affected by diplomatic decisions.
