1753 Northern Coria sovereignty referendum
The 1753 Northern Coria sovereignty referendum was a referendum in Northern Coria (a realm of the Order of the Holy Lakes (Hurmu)), held on 12.XII.1753 on the matter of cession of Northern Coria to Çakaristan.
Background
The referendum was held to the backdrop of the Civil Code controversy in Northern Coria, in which the religiously aligned government (headed by Mihajlo Slobodanović) had been deeply critical of the Civil Code's insistence on both recognition and performance of same-sex marriage, polygamy, and regulation of adoptions, in a manner contrary to the Corian Orthodox Church teachings.
As such, Slobodanović and his government, with the consent of Prince Velibor Jovanović-Smičić, devised a referendum on the question of transfer of sovereignty of Northern Coria to Çakaristan. However, during the debate stage in the legislature, the referendum bill was amended to allow for the transfer of any municipality to be transferred to Çakaristan if a majority of the voters so indicated, provided that any municipality so doing needed to border Çakaristan or any other municipality being transferred to Çakaristan.
