Companion of the Holy Lakes
Companion of the Holy Lakes (Hurmu Norse: Ryss helgo sjooa; RHS) is the title reserved members of the Order of the Holy Lakes who do not, for whatever, reason wish to be referred to as Knight of the Holy Lakes or Lady of the Holy Lakes. For example, it is used non-gendered or non-binary members of the Order of the Holy Lakes. It may also, for example, be used by pacifist members who find "knight" too militaristic or not in line with their values.
Prior to 1720, the title was translated as "Esquire". A petition had been circulated amongst the members of the order (probably by Humanists) to have this "absurd and redundant provision" deleted. Humanists also sponsored abolishing the title, having submitted a question on the matter to a referendum, during the 1718 Hurmu general elections, which failed. Instead, the Chancellor and Commander of the Order changed the translation of "ryss" from "esquire" to "companion". Esquire became a title for those retainers from the Hurmu Fyrð that members of the Order have the right to claim.
