The Strait Tunnel Project is a project to connect the states of Kendall Khanate and Sylfystan. The tunnel will be 69.5 km long under the Jaris Strait.
On the south side, the Sylfystan connection will be realised from the existing rail link between Kuriabad and Tiren. A shuttle station to let road traffic on special commuter trains. Then an 18-km bridge to Speer Island. At Speer Island, the bridge merges into the Strait Tunnel to return above ground 69.5 km north. On the northern side, there will also be a shuttle station and the track will be connected to the planned high-speed railway line to Çatalyokuş and Lyzij.
Design
The design consists of three tubes, two tubes with one track each, diameter 7.9 metres, and between them an escape and service tube with a diameter of 4.8 metres. At one-third and two-thirds of the tunnel length, there are switches and connecting tracks between the two main tubes. This allows accidents in one of the six sections to still keep the other five sections in operation. There are escape routes between the service tube and the rail tubes every 375 metres and vent connections every 200 metres.
The tracks are to be built in dual gauge: 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) and 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in). This makes it suitable for the planned high-speed line between Agra and Çatalyokuş, the Apollonian Express and for freight trains to and from Manbai. On both sides of the tunnel there will be a marshalling yard and turning loops. These turning loops will allow shuttle trains to turn around quickly.
History
Dreams
As early as 1693 AN, Sultan Akbar Çakar had revealed his dream of a tunnel under the Jaris Strait to the president of Mercury, Nick Perry. The tunnel design proved unfeasible. The project was shelved during the formation of the Great Apollonian Empire, with the expectation that it would be revived as a connecting project for the Empire. This did not happen.
Later, Xunpadshahan had the same dream of further connecting the nation. He organised the financing, purchased the land and engaged foreign contractors. Although the tender was public and subject to strict rules to prevent corruption, Xunpadshahan was very pleased that an New Alexandrian contractor had won the tender.
Construction
Engineers argue that Wechua concrete is the best material to build the tunnel safely and sustainably. However, this does not appear to be a requirement in the published tender documents, which caused a stir in various media. This, in addition to the fact that in early 1746 AN, a contractor had still not been selected. It was finally announced on 3.VII.1746 AN that Parap Construction and Engineering had won the tender. Construction started in late 1746 AN.
