The Free State of Ghent (Vrijstaat Gent) was a province of the Virtual United Provinces. It was founded on January 22, 2007 from the territory of East Flanders. On January 24, 2007 it ratified the Union of Utrecht 2007, forming the United Provinces with the Free State of Antwerp.
On June 11, 2008 all provincial autonomy was given up and the free state ceased to exist.
Culture and politics
Ghent had a vibrant culture and lots of parties. Its culture was more or less leftist in nature. Ghent was also the first province with an active economy.
According to the constitution (full text), legislative power was vested in the People's House (Volkshuis). The entire provincial population was member of the People's House. The Eksee was the chief executive. There were several political crises and the constitution was amended twice.
