The Southern Municipality (Hurmu Norse: Syndra byalageð or Syndra byalag; Lakkvian: Lõunapoolne vald) is the southern-most municipality of the Lake District and of Hurmu. Integrated into the Lake District in 1720, it was previously the Southern District. Prior to 1719, the Southern District was outside Hurmu's customs area and access to it was restricted for citizens and foreigners alike.
It is a rural municipality.
