Mhazar is the second most populated city in Vegno, with a population of 420,845 residents. It's located in the Region of Mhazar-Campoasciutto, of which it is the capital, in the most inland area of the Vegnese territory.
It is one of the most important cities in Vegno and, despite not having his own airport yet, it is connected to the other vegnese centers thanks to the Ferrovie Statali Vegnesi (State Vegnese Railway) and the system of Autostrade of Vegno (Vegnese Highways), being reached by both the A1 and A2.
Administration
The legislative body of the municipality is the Consiglio Comunale (City Council), which is composed of 36 councillors elected every three years with a proportional system, at the same time as the mayoral elections. The executive body is the Giunta Comunale (City Committee), composed of 7 assessors, nominated and presided over by a directly elected Mayor. The current mayor of Florence is Peppino Teobaldo, listed for Forza Vegno.
The municipality of Mhazar is subdivided into five administrative Boroughs (Quartieri). Each borough is governed by a Council (Consiglio) and a President, elected at the same time as the city mayor. The urban organisation is governed by the Vegnese Constitution. The boroughs have the power to advise the Mayor with nonbinding opinions on a large spectrum of topics (environment, construction, public health, local markets) and exercise the functions delegated to them by the City Council; in addition they are supplied with an autonomous funding in order to finance local activities. The boroughs are:
- Q1 – Duomo (Historic Centre);
- Q2 – Porta Maggiore;
- Q3 – Lunari;
- Q4 – Stadio (Stadium);
- Q5 – Ponte Nuovo.
All of the five boroughs are actually governed by Forza Vegno, whose leader, Luca "Lo Zar" Zarrella, was born in Mhazar.
1706 Local Elections
The First Mhazar local elections were made in 1706 and saw the victory of the candidate of Forza Vegno, Peppino Teobaldo, with the 58% of the preferences of the Mhazar citizens.
The City Council elections are based on a proportional system with preferences: for each list, the candidates with the most preferences are elected proportionally to the seats assigned to the list, with the lists supporting the elected mayor being granted around 60% of the total seats to guarantee governability.
Sports
Mhazar is one of the most important cities in Vegno for sports: it has 2 football squads and one National circuit that will host two Grand Prix in 2022 for Formula Vegno.
Football
Both the Atletico Mhazar and AS Virtus Glovetese are based in the City of Mhazar, putting it on the top of the most important cities for football tradition in Vegno. Both of them are using the Mhacompare Arena, the private stadium of Mhazar, which can host 33,000 supporters, and is the third biggest stadium in Vegno.
Motorsport
The Autodromo Nazionale di Mhazar is located on the outskirts of Mhazar, immersed in a large national park of 300 hectares, and is considered one of the most important and spectacular circuits in the country, typical for its incredible top speeds reached by Formula Vegno cars.
It will host both the 2022 Mhazar Grand Prix and the 2022 Campoasciutto Grand Prix, respectively on 14 April and 29 September 2022.
Culture
Food and Wine
Food and wine have long been an important staple of the economy. The Campoasciutto region is just south of the city, and its Sangiovanni grapes figure prominently not only in its Campoasciutto wines but also in many of the more recently developed regions blends.
Mhazar food grows out of a tradition of peasant eating rather than rarefied high cooking. The majority of dishes are based on meat. The whole animal was traditionally eaten; tripe and stomach were once regularly on the menu and still are sold at the food carts stationed throughout the city. The bistecca alla Campoasciutto is a large (the customary size should weigh around 1.2 to 1.5 kg) – the "date" steak – T-bone steak of bovine beef cooked over hot charcoal and served very rare with its more recently derived version, the Tagliata, sliced rare beef served on a bed of arugula, often with slices of cheese on top. Most of these courses are generally served with local olive oil.
Cinema
Mhazar has been a setting for numerous works of fiction and movies in Vegno. The City is also the primary host for the "Festival del Film Vegnese di Mhazar" (Mhazar Vegnese Film Festival), in which, every year, are assigned the trophies for the best movies and actors of Vegno.
