Gan Hewei (Yewlang: 甘賀煒) or Brian Gan is a professional footballer who plays for Liga Mataba club Pretaling Daya City. Gan can operate as a center-attacking midfielder, wing-back and center midfielder. Born in Daau to Krasno parents., he represents the Mataba national team.

Arguably one of the most accomplished midfielders in the LiM, he is known for his high work rate and superb technical abilities. He moved to Mataba in 2017 to join Pretaling Daya City.

Early life

Hewei was born in Daau to a full-Krasno family and moved away before his 1st birthday back to Belaov. He does not hold Dauian citizenship and has announced that he also does not hold a Dauian passport as rumors surfaced.

Gan studied in Sakurin Private School and was a member of the school football team however failed to make an official appearance. He was featured seldomly in friendlies and only managed to make one appearance recorded on the school website.

Hewei was told early in his high school varsity football career that he would not make it professional and it led to Gan almost switching schools due to the mass amount of bullying. He then left Sakurin for Belaov Tem. Sek Polytechnic. He played football for both of the schools and was regarded as the best player on the team respectively. His massive football talent led to him being signed on a scholarship deal by Kytzu Belaov University.

He graduated in 2015 and has since moved on to professional football.

Senior career

Belaov Treble

Gan was signed by Belaov Treble once he graduated on a free transfer.

Hewei made his debut in a 3-1 victory to Etchers Invincible, with him being subbed in the 70th minute to score a hattrick to seal off the victory for his side. He would make his first start for Belaov Treble in another 3-1 victory over Belaov City.

He was regarded as one of the best players to ever boss the Belaov Treble midfield as he was able to score 30 goals in 26 appearances while operating as a sole central midfield. He was known to cut into spaces and attempt to drive through the forward runs of the forwards. Gan was able to succeed under the new Belaov Treble tactical style as he was trained under the same coach when he was a small child as the one who was managing Belaov Treble.

However, Gan would be injured for the second half of the 2015-16 season due to a torn ACL and was able to make a recovery for the 2016-17 season but fell out with the newly appointed manager as he showed a lack of passion as cited in a press conference. Gan would only play 3 more games in 2016 and was transferred on deadline day.

Pretaling Daya City

Gan would sign for Pretaling Daya for a mere Cr 3k fee as he was placed on the transfer list and made a drastic attempt to leave the club as he felt there was no more use to continue at Treble.

Hewei was a consistent passing machine instead of an attacking-minded central midfielder at Pretaling Daya and has settled on his new role of a passing and chance-creating machine. Gan's first season with PD City saw him slot right into the vacant central attacking midfield role where he managed to score 5 goals in 12 appearances across all competitions. He was given the Fan's player of the year award by the City fans. Hewei's second and third seasons saw him occasionally slot into the wingback role where City was lacking as he had the prowess to do so and performed consistently.

Following some tactical changes and a new manager during the 2020-21 season, Gan was given the role to slot into the center midfield role again and managed to become the core of the team, using his excellent vision and sharp passes to create chances for his team. He would proceed in his newfound role for the first half of the 2021-22 season before moving back into attacking midfield to bolster the injury-ridden City attack.

He is would gain his Matabese passport on the 19th of January 2023 following his successful application to the Mataba FST scheme.

Style of play

Gan has been described as the tactician by his teammates and the heart of the team as he is able to control the tempo and attempt to claw goals for his side. His ability to read the opposition quickly allows him to make right runs forward and ask for passes. When gan played wingback, he was known to be a menace to opposition defenders and attackers as he was a strong and buff player who never let anything slid though. He is also known for his pinpoint crossing ability and a sharp eye for freekicks, making him the freekick master of the Liga Mataba.

Personal life

Hewei has a brother, Gan Shenglong who plays for Sultan FC and has been fully naturalized by Mataba.
