Liga Mataba (abbv as LiM) is the only professional football league in the Dauian region of Mataba. The League was founded in mid-August to promote football in Mataba and bring more Matabese player overseas and is the core part of the Matabese Football Project. The league is also known as IAI Liga Mataba for sponsorship reasons.

The League used to run from late November to late March in the same year with the league cup at the end of the season to determine the champions of Mataba. The league switched format in 2025 following the Matabese Civil War and deemed that seasons would run from February to October, with the league cup scheduled in November.

History

Opening Season

The LiM's first edition will be the 2022–23 Liga Mataba with 6 teams confirmed to be playing this season with signups still open. Mataba Sailors FC claimed the first championship with a 5 point lead over the other teams.

The 2023–24 season was put on a standstill as MFF underwent reforms alongside the city's failing economy. The 2024–25 edition was also put on hold due to the Matabese Civil War before resuming in early 2025.

Format

Competition

There are 6 clubs in the league who play each other twice in a double round-robin system throughout the course of the season, once at home and once away. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss. Teams are ranked by points scored, then goal-difference for tie breakers. If there is still a tie, the positions will be decided based on goals scored. If there is still a tie for relevant occupancies such as the league title, qualification to any competition, or relegation, a play-off will be hosted in a home and away format to decide league standings.

Liga Mataba clubs have almost complete freedom to sign whatever number and category of players they wish. There is no team or individual salary cap, no squad size limit, no age restrictions other than those applied by general employment law. However teams are restricted to not more than 5 foreign players in the squad for the season. Players move on free transfers as contracts only last for a year, but some contracts can be as long as three years, and the transfer fees are small. Due to the nature of the league, players that earn a nominal salary need second jobs to support themselves however top players can command respectable football salaries.
