Mataba Sailors Football Club, commonly referred to as The Sailors or MAS is an association football club competing in the Liga Mataba, the top tier of the Matabese football league system. Since its founding, the club has played all its games at the Jaran Besor Stadium in Jaran Besor.
MAS is one of the richest football clubs in Mataba, with its club owner being Kevin Abdulman, who also owns Kea Ltd.
History
Sailors of Mataba FC was originally founded by Tan Yi Long in 2013, before merging with Mataba FC in early 2022 to officially form Mataba Sailors FC Ltd.
When the Liga Mataba was formed in 2022, the club's initial application was a failure as the club was deemed financially unstable before being sold to Kea Ltd under Phorest Pee. The club would then sign a number of local and foreign talents in order to get ready for the upcoming season. The Sailor Boys however went on a 4 game winless streak in the Liga Mataba and soon sacked manager Luca Lalej and his coaching staff following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Valestir Bahlsa in the league, finishing 8th in the standings before the January break. The team would hire Vegno manager Roberto Seno as their new head coach heading into 2023.
Mataba Sailors then spashed Cr 600k on Mattia Ferrari of Valenterosa FC on the 1st of January 2023, breaking records and making him the most expensive transfer a club from Mataba has ever paid for with Mattia signing a 3-year long deal to stay with the club and Mataba.
The team has since become a feeder club to F.C. Cossa Perfection in Vegno following their Kea takeover.
Mataba Sailors Football Academy
In February 2013, Sailors of Mataba FC opened and operated a football academy, Sailors of Mataba FC Youth Football Academy (SoMYFA). SoMYFA comprises ten futsal courts, two full-size football pitches, an events plaza, staff offices, meeting rooms and a Sports Performance Centre.
In June 2020, the launch of the new Sailors of Mataba Football Academy was announced, along with further plans on youth development and its investments. It was given a one-star rating by the Asian Football Confederation.
On 24 April 2021, the Sailors of Mataba announced the construction of a new training facility that will be home to both the Sailors and the Sailors of Mataba Football Academy.
Following the rebranding of the club and the new owners, the project would continue development and was renamed to the Mataba Sailors Football Center, the football academy was renamed to the Mataba Sailors Football Academy. The facility was completed in late 2022 and was able to house the senior team into the new season.
