There are 6 clubs in the league who play each other twice in a double round-robin system throughout the course of the season, once at home and once away. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss. Teams are ranked by points scored, then goal-difference for tie breakers. If there is still a tie, the positions will be decided based on goals scored. If there is still a tie for relevant occupancies such as the league title, qualification to any competition, or relegation, a play-off will be hosted in a home and away format to decide league standings.

Liga Mataba clubs have almost complete freedom to sign whatever number and category of players they wish. There is no team or individual salary cap, no squad size limit, no age restrictions other than those applied by general employment law. However teams are restricted to not more than 5 foreign players in the squad for the season. Players move on free transfers as contracts only last for a year, but some contracts can be as long as three years, and the transfer fees are small. Due to the nature of the league, players that earn a nominal salary need second jobs to support themselves however top players can command respectable football salaries.
