Okaru (Sangunese: お軽, translit.: Okaru?) is the city of Sanpantul and the capital of the province that bears its name. Okaru is located approximately 36 km east of Miyaji. The population of Okaru city center is 156,320, while the provincial population was 212,848 as of 1748 AN. The city is situated on the eastern side of East Sandwich Island, on a flat plain and on the coast of a shallow sea. The city gained provincial status in 1748, before which it was a district of Miyaji prefecture. The city is famous for its beer and especially sake production. It is also the only place in Sanpantul where commercial alfalfa is grown.

History

The city actually has a long history, with the earliest sources indicating it was a Brettish town. Anglo-Sanpanese culture forms the main fabric of the city, as does Kipei and Kaazu. Later, the city came under Elwynnese rule, and then Natopian rule. During the Coastalis period, the area was an important pirate stronghold. Later, the Skerry Islands turned green. The city was captured during the Sanpanese War of Independence and subsequently incorporated into Minzhugawa Prefecture when Sanpantul was established in 1674 AN. Later, in 1682 AN, the name of Minzhugawa Prefecture was changed to Miyaji. After the 1692 Tortuga micrasquake, the region came under Batavian occupation, and during the Batavian period, the city became an important archive storage center. When Sanpantul was re-established in 1702 AN, it was again attached to the Miyaji Prefecture.

The city became incredibly crowded in the last ten to twenty years. The population in the city decreased significantly with the establishment of the Ezo Republic in 1728 AN. New alcoholic beverage factories were established in the city in 1730 AN. The famine of 1735-1737 affected the entire country and impacted the production of alfalfa and hops in Okaru, leading to an increase in the cultivation of the more resilient cassava plant. In 1748 AN, the once unified Okaru district was declared a province and divided into three sub-districts.
