Third Oportian Republic

The Third Oportian Republic refers to the period of Oportia's history beginning with the democratic restoration following the defeat of Oportia by the Raspur Pact allied powers in the Fourth Euran War and the collapse of the National Salvation Council. This era commenced with the establishment of the Transitional Federal Cabinet of Oportia under Transitional Federal Representative Felicia Belanger and Transitional Chancellor Cyrus Valsinoire, marking the return to constitutional democratic governance after the authoritarian period that had begun with the 1744 Oportian coup d'état.

This period represents a renewed commitment to democratic governance, informed by the lessons learned from both the instability that preceded the 1744 Oportian coup d'état and the experience of authoritarian rule under Commodore Joseph Fouche. The Third Republic's founding principles emphasized institutional resilience, civilian control of the military, transparency in governance, and protection of democratic freedoms that had been suspended during the New Oportian State period.

The transitional period (1745 AN-1747 AN) was characterized by extensive constitutional reforms recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Oportia and implemented by the Transitional Consultative Council of Oportia. These reforms fundamentally restructured Oportian governance, including the replacement of the Chamber of Deputies with a 381-seat National Assembly of Oportia, expansion of the Senate of Oportia to 85 seats, and reorganization of the country into 14 departments. The period also saw Oportia's constitutional renunciation of war as a sovereign right and the reconstitution of its military as the Oportian Self-Defense Forces under strict civilian control.

The formal establishment of the State of Oportia occurred following the 1747 general election, which saw an unprecedented 96.4% voter turnout despite ongoing security concerns from remnants of the previous regime. The election, originally scheduled for XIV.1746 AN but postponed due to security considerations, resulted in a decisive victory for the Democratic Restoration Coalition (DRC) led by Felicia Belanger, who secured 68.0% of the federal representative vote.

The DRC's electoral success extended beyond the federal representative position, capturing supermajorities in both legislative chambers with 287 of 381 seats in the National Assembly and 62 of 85 seats in the Senate. The coalition also secured control of 21 of 33 mayoral races and 12 of 14 departmental governments, providing a strong mandate for implementing democratic reforms and constitutional changes.
