The Green Party of Oportia (GPO) was a green and left-wing political party in Oportia during the Second Republic. Founded in 1707 AN and led from 1729 AN by Felicia Belanger, it advocated environmental protection, sustainability, and social justice, and was unusual in hosting three distinct factions united by a shared commitment to environmentalism. Headquartered in Vanie, the GPO was a mainstay of the Second Republic's progressive and environmental bloc, and in III.1738 AN joined the Liberal Progressive Party of Oportia (LPP) in the Green Progressive Alliance that won that year's general election.
The GPO was dissolved during the National Salvation Council junta of 1744 AN to 1745 AN. Belanger went on to lead the anti-junta Democratic Restoration Committee, and under the Third Oportian Republic the party's green and social-democratic tradition was carried into the Democratic Restoration Coalition (DRC).
Factions
The Environmentalist faction, led by Claire Fontaine, focused on traditional environmental activism, promoting policies aimed at conservation, renewable energy, and reducing carbon footprints. The Communist faction, under Lucien Rousseau, advocated radical structural changes to society and the economy to combat environmental degradation, emphasizing collective ownership and the dismantling of capitalist structures. The Market Socialists, guided by Étienne Girard, supported environmentally friendly market reforms and social democratic principles to transition Oportia towards sustainability without completely overthrowing the capitalist system.
