The Shrine of the Seas is a Melusinian sanctuary at Gotfriedplatz, the capital of the Isles of Caputia in Nouvelle Alexandrie. One of the great shrines of the Melusinian Faith and a place of pilgrimage for the faithful of the Federation and beyond, it is the foremost holy site of the faith in the islands.[1][2]
The shrine
The shrine stands at Gotfriedplatz, a city grown from a port and fishing community on the coast of the main island of the region, much of it lying below the level of the sea.[3] Its dedication is to Melusine, the Cow of the Sea, whom the faith honors as the sister and counterpart of Bous in the Bovic tradition, and its devotions follow the maritime character that unites the shrines of the faith.[2] As at the faith's other sanctuaries, worship turns on the sacrament of holy butter and the veneration of sacred waters.[2]
Pilgrimage
The people of the Isles of Caputia are drawn largely from the Caputian diaspora, among whom the Melusinian Faith is the principal religion, and the shrine serves as the region's chief object of pilgrimage.[1] Pilgrims come to it from across Nouvelle Alexandrie and from the wider diaspora, for whom it is among the sacred places kept by Melusinian communities beyond the faith's living seat.[2]
Status
The Shrine of the Seas is counted among the sacred sites of the Melusinian diaspora, alongside the holy places of Natopia and the great shrines of the faith's Keltian homeland.[2] The living institutions of the faith are led from the neighboring Region of New Caputia, where the Matriarch of New Zalae resides at the city of St. Melusine, and the shrine at Gotfriedplatz keeps the devotion of the faithful within the Isles.[2]
