Port Karsten is a city in the Isles of Caputia, a region of Nouvelle Alexandrie, and the second city of the region after the regional capital, Gotfriedplatz. It lies in the state of Gotfriedland and Karsten and is the seat of Port Karsten University. Founded about 1620 AN, it is a port of Kydrian name on formerly Iridian ground, and its harbor was rebuilt by the Caputian Resettlement Authority during the resettlement of the islands. Its population is estimated at some 2,100,000.[1]

History

Port Karsten stands on islands that were once part of Iridia, the remnant Iridian lands about Gotfriedplatz that gave the archipelago its Kydrian core. After Iridia's union with Ocia the islands passed briefly under Ocian control and then under Hammish rule. The port was founded about 1620 AN and grew into one of the principal Kydrian settlements of the islands.[1][2]

Under the Kingdom of Caputia the archipelago formed a state in its own right, and after Caputian rule ended in the White Plague the islands passed with the rest of the Region of the Isles into Nouvelle Alexandrie. In the resettlement that followed, the harbor at Port Karsten was rebuilt by the Caputian Resettlement Authority, as were the ports at Port Tablot and Velez.[3][4]

Economy

The city's economy rests on its rebuilt harbor and on fishing, a mainstay of the island economy since the Hammish period; the archipelago is among the leading fishing grounds of the Federation.[5] The city is the seat of Nordfryst AS, a frozen-foods multinational of the ESB Group, which redomiciled its headquarters to Port Karsten in 1753 AN.[6]

Modern city

The second city of the Isles of Caputia after Gotfriedplatz, Port Karsten is one of the two principal cities of the state of Gotfriedland and Karsten, whose two halves are joined across Karsten Sound by the Isles of Caputia Belt Bridge.[1][7] It is the seat of Port Karsten University, one of the universities of the region.[8] Its football club, the Port Karsten Kings, founded about 1689 AN, play in Ligue 1.[9]
