Osterwald formally the Republic of Osterwald, is a internationally unrecognised country in Eastern Keltia. It is a federation of four states, of which the capital Grünstadt is the most populous city and state. The country has a population of around 3.8 million.
Etymology
The name directly translates from Holzer to common tongue to "East Forest".
History
The region now known as Osterwald was historically dominated by dense pine and fir forests, nestled along a mountain range known as the Südlich Alpen. Indigenous tribes of foragers and herders known as the Walder inhabited the valleys, developing early forms of dialect that would eventually influence Osterwald’s modern version of the Holzer language.
In 1720, these people and deserting Florian soldiers from Operation Green Marauder founded the first structured communities in places like Grünstadt and Kronfeld. These settlements formed the basis of what would become Osterwald's main urban centres.
Government and politics
The Federal Council of Osterwald is located in Grünstadt, the country's capital and most populous city. Osterwald since foundation has been a federal, representative democratic republic.
The president of Osterwald is the head of state. The president is directly elected by popular majority vote, with a run-off between the top-scoring candidates if necessary. The chancellor of Osterwald is head of the government. The chancellor is selected by the president and tasked with forming a government based on the partisan composition of the lower house of parliament.
The government can be removed from office by either a presidential decree or by vote of no confidence in the lower chamber of parliament, the Unterhaus.
Osterwald's parliament consists of two chambers. The composition of the Unterhaus (100 seats) is determined every 12 years (or whenever the House of Commons has been dissolved by the federal president on a motion by the federal chancellor, or by the House of Commons itself) by a general election in which every citizen over the age of 18 has the right to vote.
Geography
Demographics
Osterwald's population is around 3.8 million people. The population of the capital, Grünstadt, exceeds over 1 million, representing just over a quarter of the country's population. It is known for its cultural offerings and high standard of living.
Grünstadt is the country's largest city. Neuheim is second in size, with 291,000 inhabitants, followed by Altwasser (130,000), and Kronfeld (100,000).
Florians form one of the largest ethnic groups in Osterwald, numbering around 350,000. However, due to the recent migration trends, number of former Osttland nationals surpassed the number of Florian nationals in the country.
Economy
The economy of Osterwald is characterised by stability, environmental sustainability, and high levels of regional self-sufficiency. Despite its relatively small population of 3.8 million, Osterwald has developed a reputation for economic resilience and innovation, particularly in niche sectors suited to its alpine geography.
Osterwald’s industrial base is rooted in precision manufacturing, particularly in the cities of Neuheim and Kronfeld, which are hubs for the production of high-end mechanical components, cable car systems, and sustainable alpine technologies. Small and mid-sized engineering firms, many family-owned, play a dominant role in the export market, with products shipped to both neighbouring nations and mountainous regions abroad.
The tourism sector is another vital pillar of the economy, contributing nearly one-fifth of the national GDP. Osterwald’s pristine environment, centered around the Osterberge mountain range, attracts large numbers of visitors year-round for skiing, mountaineering, thermal spas, and cultural heritage experiences. The government strictly regulates tourism to preserve natural resources, with eco-certifications required for all resort developments.
Forestry remains a traditional yet modernised sector. Sustainable logging practices, combined with a strong emphasis on reforestation, enable the export of high-quality timber and finished wood products, including furniture and musical instruments. Many rural communities remain economically dependent on cooperative-based forestry operations.
Agriculture in Osterwald, though small-scale, is centered on high-value artisanal production. The Altwasser region is famous for its cheeses, smoked meats, and herb-infused butters, many of which hold protected status under Osterwald’s geographic indication laws. These products are major cultural exports and feature prominently in the country’s soft-power branding.
Osterwald has positioned itself as a emerging power in green technology and renewable energy innovation. The capital city, Grünstadt, hosts a growing tech sector focused on smart energy systems, snow-runoff storage, and solar infrastructure adapted for high-altitude environments. Startups receive state incentives and benefit from close partnerships with research institutions and technical universities.
The country’s economic model is heavily decentralised. Municipalities maintain control over local economic planning, infrastructure budgets, and trade zoning. Osterwald’s constitution guarantees regional cooperatives and citizen assemblies the right to direct development at the community level. Unemployment remains low, typically under 4 percent, while GDP per capita is estimated at just under $33,000.
Osterwald’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its energy profile: more than 75 percent of the country’s electricity is generated through hydroelectric and wind sources, and the forestry sector is legally required to be carbon negative.
Internationally, Osterwald trades primarily with Floria. Its export economy relies on a combination of physical goods such as dairy, timber, and machinery and seasonal tourism revenue.
