The Mercurian crown is the official currency of Mercury, which was adopted on 1 July 2020. It replaced the Mercury Credit, which had been used in Mercury since its foundation in 2010.
Rationale for adoption
The Mercurian government elected to adopt the Crown following the eruption of Montaña Blanca and the evacuation of Lusa, North Antarctica and Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq. Despite the Credit being pegged to the value of the Cräite, it fell dramatically as a result of the eruption and subsequent economic downturn, meaning that the government had to borrow additional money in order to carry out the evacuation, as they were no longer being accepted on a 1:1 basis internationally. The vast increase in government spending, in turn, had depleted the amount of Credits available within Mercury, causing significant falls in prices. With Mercury not being able to exert sufficient control over its currency, it became necessary to separate it from the Cräite, to allow flexibility to act in similar situations.
The government decided that the new currency would not be subdivided, but would instead take on an initial ratio of 100:1 against the Cräite, to allow a simple conversion of existing currency into the new Crown. After an initial period, the Crown will be un-pegged from the Cräite.
Usage
The Crown is used as the sole official currency in Mercury, and also in its autonomous territories of Castilona, the Franklin Islands, Lusa, Nova England, Nova English Korea, Osktrava and Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq. The Craitish Cräite continues to be accepted in Mercury.
