The Mayor of Cárdenas is the chief executive officer of the city of Cárdenas, which serves as both the federal capital of the Federation of Nouvelle Alexandrie and the administrative center of the Federal Capital District. The mayor is the highest-ranking municipal official in the Federal Capital District and holds significant responsibility for governing the seat of federal government, making the position one of the most prominent mayoral offices in Nouvelle Alexandrie.
Established under the Regional and Local Government Organization Act, 1699, the office combines traditional municipal responsibilities with unique federal capital considerations. The mayor oversees city services, urban development, and local governance while coordinating closely with federal authorities on matters affecting the national capital. The position is elected directly by the residents of Cárdenas for four-year terms and operates within the broader framework of the Federal Capital District Council.
History
The office of Mayor of Cárdenas was formally established in 1699 AN as a temporary office following the passage of the Regional and Local Government Organization Act, 1699 and the adoption of the Federal Capital District Charter. The creation of the office was necessitated by Cárdenas's designation as the federal capital under Article 4 of the Proclamation of Punta Santiago, which established that "the city of Cárdenas and its immediate environs, as outlined by law, shall form the Federal Capital District."[1]
The Spring Crisis of 1739 marked a significant period in the office's development, as the mayor played a crucial role in maintaining civil order in the capital during the attempted coup. This period highlighted the importance of strong municipal leadership in preserving democratic institutions and led to enhanced cooperation protocols between municipal and federal security agencies.
