Mayani Guacanagari is a Wakara politician and political theorist from Boriquén, Nouvelle Alexandrie. With Beatriz Daguao she co-founded the Wakara People's Party (WPP) in 1722 AN and led it jointly with Daguao until 1744 AN. A principal architect of Guaitiao progressivism, the party's governing doctrine, she represents Boriquén in the Federal Assembly and serves as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the government formed under the Federal Accord in 1760 AN.
Political career
Guacanagari and Beatriz Daguao founded the Wakara People's Party in 1722 AN to advance the interests of the Wakara people within Boriquén. Under their joint leadership the party became the dominant political force in the region and a defender of Wakara autonomy under the Plan de Hato Rey. In 1724 AN Guacanagari and Daguao presented the Wakara Identity Act, 1724, the party's landmark measure on Wakara cultural rights. Guacanagari sat as a Deputy for Boriquén across several sittings of the Cortes Federales.
By late 1743 AN Guacanagari and Daguao, both in their early seventies, announced their retirement from the party leadership, and at the 1744 Wakara People's Party Congress they gave way to a younger generation. Following the Pact of Shadows scandal, she served as interim leader of the Alliance for a Just Nouvelle Alexandrie (AJNA) from 1750 AN to 1752 AN. She contested the WPP leadership again in 1755 AN but was defeated by Yuiza Bohi'o.
In 1760 AN Guacanagari was appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Federal Accord government led by Premier Marcos Ferreira Gonçalves. In that office she tabled the National Housing Reform and Expansion Act, 1760 and directs the National Homebuilding Drive.
Political thought
Guacanagari is regarded as a leading theorist of Aldricism and, with Carlos Taíno, as a developer of Yocahu Aldricism, a current that joins Aldricist principles to Wakara tradition. Her 1735 AN "Cemí Balance" address and the book Yocahu: The Wakara Way in Aldricist Thought are treated as founding statements of the tendency in Boriquén.
