ESB Career
Recruited by the ESB group as a post graduate; a draughtsman of the Naval Design Bureau, he was noted for successfully interpreting the notes supplied by the ESB's agent in Minarboria, Laqi Hyrrion and with these designing the Mine Launcher feature of the Poltroon Class Submarine.
For reasons unknown, Marcellus subsequently, in 1635, requested a transfer from Amity to Goldshire Hamlet (there were rumours of a woman and or an act gross-impropriety, but then there are always such rumours when a man insists on departing suddenly). The only way for him to do this was by moving from the Logistics Directorate of ESB to the Outsourcing Directorate, which was undergoing something of an expansion after becoming responsible for swathes of Goldshire. Unfortunately for him, not only did this count, effectively, as a demotion but it also meant he was assigned to the Benacian Wild East that is Goldshire's County of Ran where anyone wearing a ESB name badge was liable to be roped into cudgelling the Agrarian Party of Ran and any other opponents of the Count of Ran, the Queen of Goldshire or the ESB Group, of whom there were many.
Salvation came from an unlikely direction when the Euran War broke out. Under the cover of mounting an Archaeological Expedition to Vey, Marcellus was dispatched, as a somewhat improbable archaeologist, to provide advice and assistance to the Armed Forces of Constancia in repelling a Jingdaoese invasion. Marcellus' stand out contribution to this was to design and organise the rapid manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IED) that could be floated into the 'Sandy River' of Southern Eura, the main supply artery and line of advance for the Jingdaoese advance into the Euran interior. This contribution alone was reported to have delayed the deployment of Jingdaoese warships upriver by several days. Marcellus next turned his attention to improvising weapons systems for the land way, following a successful Jingdaoese landing at the Constancian river town of Portus Felix. Contributions to the land war included designs for improvised armoured vehicles, 'hell cannons' or home-made artillery and land-based equivalents to the floating IEDs that were known as Infernal Machines. In so doing, the 'Vey Expedition' contributed to stabilising the front line in the Euran War at a moment when it seemed that the Kingdom was about to collapse in the face of the Jingdaoese onslaught.
In recognition of these successes, the Vey Expedition was put onto a more permanent footing and renamed the Euran Directorate in 1636, with Marcellus being promoted accordingly to the Board of Directors.
Was part of government delegation to negotiate with the Nivardomski Otechestvenofrontovska, the ultra-nationalist separatist party. Assassinated alongside Andreas Metaxas (Mesazōn of Constancia & Dean of the University of Vey), Eudokia Karbonopsina Paixhans (Strategos, Commander of the River Army, wife of Marcellus Paixhans, mistress of Andreas Metaxas), and Captain Walter Poldark (Ex-pirate, Archon of the Nivardom Theme).
