Hartmut, Prince of Elsenar (born c. 1720 AN), known as Crown Prince Hartmut, is the heir apparent to the throne of Ransenar and a member of its reigning House of Aldric. He is the eldest son of King Cosgrach I and Gormlaith of Airle, and has held the title of Prince of Elsenar, the dignity reserved for the heir to the Ransenari throne, since his father's accession in III.1752 AN.
Hartmut was born during the reign of his grandfather Ruadh I, the founder of the royal line, and is first in line to succeed his father. He is named for his great-uncle Hartmut, Duke of Calezi and Steward of Shireroth, from whom the House takes its name although it does not descend from him. He married Aoife Ní Mhaoláin, of a Goldshirian-Ransenari noble house, and their two children, Prince Nóe Aldric and Princess Cristin Aldric, stand behind him in the succession.
Early life
Hartmut Aldric was born around 1720 AN at Goldfield, the eldest son of Cosgrach, then Prince of Elsenar and heir apparent to the young Kingdom of Ransenar, and Gormlaith of Airle, of an old Ransenari house. His birth fell in the reign of his grandfather Ruadh I, who had been raised to the throne at Ransenar's accession to the Benacian Union in 1711 AN and governed as its first king. He grew up at the Palace of Termarth, the royal seat, through his grandfather's long reign, which lasted until 1752 AN.[1]
He was named for his great-uncle Hartmut, Duke of Calezi, the Steward of Shireroth who was assassinated in 1667 AN and left no children. The royal line descends not from the Steward but from his younger half-brother Ruadh I, and has carried the Steward's name down its generations.[2]
Heir apparent
On the death of his grandfather Ruadh I in III.1752 AN, when his father succeeded as Cosgrach I, Hartmut became heir apparent to the throne of Ransenar. He took the title of Prince of Elsenar, the dignity the reigning house reserved for the heir to the throne, becoming its second holder after his father, who had carried it from the Union accession of 1711 AN through the whole of Ruadh's reign.[3] The title takes its name from the county of Elsenar.
The crown Hartmut stands to inherit is largely ceremonial within Ransenar, the executive government resting with the Lord Chief Steward and the Ransenari Congress. Ransenar is a constituent kingdom of the Benacian Union rather than an independent state, and the accession of each of its kings is subject to confirmation by the First Consul, who may withhold it only on defined constitutional grounds.[4]
Family
Hartmut married Aoife Ní Mhaoláin, of a Goldshirian-Ransenari noble house. They have two children.[5]
- Prince Nóe Aldric (born around 1748 AN), named for Nóe Aldric, the progenitor of the family.
- Princess Cristin Aldric (born around 1751 AN).
His siblings are Prince Ruadh Aldric (born around 1723 AN), named for the first king, and Princess Muirgheal Aldric (born around 1726 AN); Hartmut is the eldest of the three children of Cosgrach I and Gormlaith of Airle.[6]
