The Arctic Willow is a shrub or small tree native to northern Keltia and prevalent across much of the Arctic north of the tree line. It is widely used in basket making. Within its native range and some places where it is naturalized it is found in wetlands such as lake margins and the floodplains of rivers. It is the national tree of Ioanna, where its importance as a tree crop on the resource-limited island is significant. Historically, Arctic willow was used in a wide variety of applications; forage for livestock, basketry, thatching, fences, erosion control, and even as a source for salicylic acid. Ecologically, the plant is an important host for several species of butterflies and moth, as well as a source of nectar for bees. The ease with which it grows has made it a popular plant for creating hedgerows.
