1717 Military Reorganisation in Sankt Ludwigshafen
The 1717 Military Reorganisation in Sankt Ludwigshafen refers to an effort undertaken by Stadtholder Hans Schafenweide to modernise the organisation of the armed forces of the Republic of Sankt Ludwigshafen. Before the modernisation, the formal organisation of the military only recognised the Dragonerkorps Ludwigshafen (mounted infantry), the Kriegskorps Ludwigshafen (infantry) and the Kriegsflotte Ludwigshafen (navy), three military units that were only integrated insofar as they were commanded by the Stadtholder, who had no permanent general staff to assist him in the command of the armed forces, but relied on the advice from the generals themselves. This was changed with the addition of a permanent military staff in the office of the Stadtholder in Stadt Sankt Ludwigshafen.
While the 1716 Ludwiggian Restoration saw the first use of armoured vehicles by the Republic's armed forces, the corpses also had no official place for armoured vehicles, but instead relied on set numbers of donkeys and horses. While the donkeys and horses were kept in the service, the military reorganisation saw the acquisition of diesel trucks for the first time. The reorganisation also saw the establishment of an additional corps that would employ the armoured vehicles that already existed in the inventory of the republic, the Panzergefechtswagen I.
In the Kriegskorps and the Dragonerkorps, the divisions were renamed into regiments, to better reflect the stronger distinction that was made between administrative and operational organisation of the armed forces. This distinction was not made in the navy, as its small size, only two ships were under construction, did not warrant that at that moment in time.
