Émile Laurent Vasseur (born 1702 AN) is a New Alexandrian military officer and intelligence official who has served as the Director of National Intelligence of Nouvelle Alexandrie since 1758 AN. A career officer of the Federal Forces with the rank of General, he heads the New Alexandrian Intelligence Community and is the principal intelligence adviser to the President of the Government and the Council of State.[1][2]

Vasseur rose through the Grand Army of the Federation and the Military Intelligence Directorate before his appointment as Director. He succeeded Fouad Al-Khamenei and has held the office under successive governments, including the Federal Accord government formed under Premier Marcos Ferreira Gonçalves in 1760 AN.[1]

Early life and education

Vasseur was born in 1702 AN in Biscarrosse, a state of the Region of Alduria and one of the two founding components of the Federation.[3] Commissioned into the Grand Army of the Federation, the land service of the Federal Forces, he trained for the army's intelligence branch.[4]

Military career

Vasseur held appointments in the Grand Army's Regimental Intelligence Corps and later in the Military Intelligence Directorate, the Department of Defense body responsible for the armed forces' intelligence work within the New Alexandrian Intelligence Community.[2] He rose to the rank of General, the senior grade of the general-officer band, below that of Captain General.[4]

Director of National Intelligence

Appointed Director of National Intelligence in 1758 AN, Vasseur succeeded Fouad Al-Khamenei. Al-Khamenei had in turn succeeded Solomon Wyvil, who held the office from 1739 AN. He heads the New Alexandrian Intelligence Community, the network of agencies and offices that carries out the Federation's intelligence work across foreign collection, military intelligence, and domestic security, and coordinates it through the National Intelligence Coordination Center.[2] He exercises the classification and declassification duties that the State Secrets Act, 1745 assigns to the office, legislation that Al-Khamenei had recommended to the Council of State.[5]

By law the Director must be a serving commissioned officer of the armed forces or hold training or experience in military intelligence, a requirement Vasseur meets as a career officer of the Federal Forces.[1] Within the Office of the President of the Government, he takes part in the National Security Committee, the forum in which the Premier and the Council consider national security, military, and foreign policy.[1]

The change of government that followed the general election of 1759 did not disturb his tenure, and he continued as Director under the Federal Accord government.[1]
