The Anglienen Rundfunk (AR) is the public broadcaster of the Free Duchy of Anglien, established by ducal decree in XI.1754 AN. Modeled broadly on the public service broadcasting systems of northern Apollonia, AR operates two television channels, three national radio stations, a regional radio service, and a 24-hour digital news channel. Its editorial independence from the ducal administration is enforced by a supervisory board appointed by the Diet of Anglien rather than the Council of Ministers.
AR broadcasts primarily in Crandish, with regular programming in Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian, reflecting the duchy's multilingual character. It serves as the principal medium through which Diet sessions, TRCA proceedings, and official government communications reach the Anglian public.
History
Establishment
The Anglienen Rundfunk was established by ducal decree in XI.1754 AN, during the early months of Anglien's independence following the Natopian intervention and the promulgation of the Charter of Anglien. The Charter's guarantee of the right to publish without ducal license provided the constitutional foundation for a broadcaster independent of direct government editorial control.
The transitional government of Prime Minister Eduard Vogt identified public broadcasting as an essential institution for a state emerging from the NKR occupation, during which independent media had been suppressed. The decree establishing AR placed its editorial supervision under a board appointed by the Diet, insulating it from executive influence while maintaining public accountability through the legislature.
Expansion
AR's initial service comprised AR1 television and AR Radio 1, both broadcasting from facilities in Johannsessbuurg. The service expanded rapidly during 1755 AN as infrastructure was restored and new programming capacity developed. AR2 television launched to carry cultural and minority-language content, followed by AR Radio 2 for music and entertainment programming. AR Radio 3, a youth-oriented channel, launched in IV.1755 AN in partnership with the Technical Institute of Anglien. A regional service, AR Purple Isles, was established in III.1755 AN to serve the Purple Isles and the eastern island chain from the Islands Administration's broadcasting facility at Montrial.
Funding
AR is funded through two sources: a household broadcasting levy administered by the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction, and a direct state allocation specifically covering the costs of news production and minority-language programming. The dual funding model ensures that AR's core informational and cultural mandate is sustained regardless of fluctuations in levy collection, which remains uneven in areas still recovering from the occupation.
Television
AR1
AR1 is the main national television channel, carrying news, current affairs, drama, documentary, and live coverage of Diet sessions and TRCA proceedings. It broadcasts in Crandish with subtitling in Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian for news programs.
AR2
AR2 carries cultural programming, minority-language content, and live coverage of maritime and sports events. It serves as the primary channel for Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian-language television programming, supplementing the subtitled content on AR1 with original-language productions.
Radio
AR's radio service operates three national channels and one regional service.
AR Radio 1
AR Radio 1 carries news, current affairs, and cultural programming. It broadcasts half-hourly national news bulletins and hourly fishing and weather reports serving the duchy's maritime communities along the Clear Sea coast.
AR Radio 2
AR Radio 2 focuses on music and entertainment with lighter news coverage, providing a general-audience complement to Radio 1's news-heavy schedule.
AR Radio 3
AR Radio 3 is a youth-oriented channel launched in IV.1755 AN, carrying contemporary music, social affairs commentary, and programming produced in partnership with the Technical Institute of Anglien. The channel has become a platform for younger Anglian voices and perspectives on the duchy's reconstruction.
AR Purple Isles
AR Purple Isles was established in III.1755 AN to serve the Purple Isles and the eastern island chain. Operating from the Islands Administration's broadcasting facility at Montrial, it combines national AR content with locally produced programming addressing the particular concerns of the island communities.
All radio channels carry daily programming blocks in Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian.
Digital services
AR Nüs
AR Nüs is a 24-hour digital news channel distributed via satellite and the duchy's nascent broadband network. It provides continuous news coverage supplementing the scheduled bulletins on AR1 and AR Radio 1.
Website
AR maintains a digital presence at ar.ang, providing streaming access to all channels, an archive of TRCA testimony broadcasts, and text news updated around the clock.
The website carries a Mala'anje language section administered in partnership with the Mala First Nation's broadcasting service in Qorali. This section allows the returning Mala'anje community in Anglien to access content in their language while domestic Mala'anje-language programming capacity is developed.
Languages
AR reflects the multilingual character of the Free Duchy. Primary broadcasting is in Crandish, the duchy's official language. Daily programming blocks in Anglo-Saksen and Alexandrian are carried across all radio channels, and AR1 news programs are subtitled in both minority languages. AR2 carries original-language minority programming. The Mala'anje language section of the AR website represents the first step toward incorporating the indigenous language into the duchy's broadcasting landscape.
