The SAI SM5A is a selective fire modular assault rifle developed and produced by Sanama Arms Industries.
The SAI SM5A is a modular firearm that is gas-operated and has the capability for selective firing. It takes inspiration from other modern designs and is unique in its ability to switch between configurations in mere minutes. This weapon, in 5.56×45mm, 6.80x43mm and 7.62x39mm, is only accessible to the military and law enforcement. Its versatility is due to its modular design, allowing the user to change calibers by simply swapping out the bolt head, barrel, and magazine.
For maintenance, all of the rifle's parts can be easily removed and all of its controls are ambidextrous. A three-position fire selector lever (safe, semi-auto, full auto) is located on the pistol grip and the charging handle can be placed on either side of the receiver without moving during firing. The magazine release button is also ambidextrous and the spent case ejection port is on the right side but with a case deflector to protect left-handed shooters.
Customization options for the SM5A include the handguard, stock type, and trigger unit setup. The stocks come in fixed adjustable, folding adjustable, and sniper versions, while the handguard options are aluminum with user-configurable rails or polymer with heat guards and attachable aluminum tri-rails. It uses a 30-round, high-impact, polymer magazine that is more durable in harsh conditions than its competition.
The rifle is available in four barrel lengths, allowing it to be converted into a standard rifle, carbine, compact rifle, or designated marksman rifle without the need for any tools. All barrel lengths, for all calibers, are hammer-forged and treated with a nitriding process, making them stronger than other rifles with chrome-plated bores.
