The State of Souf is the Southernmost state of the Confederated States of Gran Verionia. Originally a loose alliance of city states, it became part of the Verionian Empire in 1675. In 1682, after the reforms following the Unification, Souf became a State of Gran Verionia. Souf has a hot climate, and lies on the Micras equator. It has a large coastline on the Sea of Storms.
History
The State of Souf is one of the richest of the nation, due to the presence of largely autonomous merchant cities that have existed since the fall of the Interlandian Republic in the 16th century. The independence of the region allowed for the merchants of Souf to acquire great wealth. The merchants of Souf were the first allies of the Verionist leadership after their establishment of the Verionian Empire in 1675. The Iron Company signed several contracts with the merchants whiched proved highly lucrative and important to off-set losses suffered in the Verionian-Raspur War.
Politics
Originally a highly liberal part of the world, Souf has seen a recent surge of religiously inspired nationalist activity. Most notably from Hizbusoufi, a political movement that was formed to oppose the Verionian rule in Souf. Hizbusoufi currently holds the majority in the Majlis an-Nuwwab, the State parliament of Souf. However, the power of government is still tightly controlled by the Merchants, which has lead to great tension in the State.
Demographics
The largest demographic in the State are the Soufi, numbering slightly less than 50% of the population. Additional significant population groups are: Toroshi (20%), Xernan (11%), Keraqi (7%) and Martino (6%).
Culture
Souf is a hub of culture, arts and knowledge. The Great School of Souf, located in Port Xerna, is the best university in the entire Confederation. Soufi literature and poetry is also widely renowned.
Souf has its own language, Soufi which is a latinised version of the Southern dialect of the Toroshi language. However, Toroshi remains the most widely used language in the state.
Economy
The State of Souf is a mercantile and financial hub of Gran Verionia. The Banco Nacional de Gran Verionia has its headquarters in Cham-al-Souf, as have many of the largest companies in the Confederation.
