A series of micrasquakes occurred on 2 May 2020 (1684 AN), in North Antarctica and Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq killing 28 people. The first struck at 6:22 a.m. local time (01:22 CMT) with a magnitude of 5.2 Mw, at a depth of 5.3 kilometres. The epicentre was around 12 kilometres south of Livingston. Two further tremors were felt throughout the day.


Aftershocks

A second micrasquake of magnitude 3.8 Mw followed, at 5:42 p.m. local time on the same day, 65km further west from the original tremor. A third tremor occured in eastern Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq, of magnitude 4.1 Mw at 8:37 p.m. local time.

Damage

Several buildings in the southern part of Livingston were destroyed by the quakes, including over 750 residential properties.

Casualties

A total of 28 people were killed in the micrasquakes, with a further 551 injured, 63 of those being severely injured.

International

  • Florian Republic Florian Republic The Florian Republic sent $1.4 million in aid and sent a team of 50 troops to assist distributing supplies.
  • Imperial Trade Union Imperial Trade Union The Bassarids offered their support and condolences for the lives lost as a result of the earthquake and prepared War League forces, stationed in the Domain of the North Antarctic which was mostly unaffected by the earthquake, to provide assistance to the government of Mercury should it be requested.
  • Senya Senya Senya offered aid in the form of both financial assistance, blankets, medicine and food should the Mercurian authorities accept.
  • Palesmenia Palesmenia Palesmenia gave aid in the form of medical equitment and financial aid to Mercurian authorities.
