The Jarl of Varmland is the chief executive of Varmland. Usually elected for four-year terms, though until 1594 they were three-year term. If there is a resignaiton of the Jarl during their term, then a new election is held to fill the position for the remainder of that term. This has occurred in 1686, 1696, and 1721.

- Yngve Karlsen, 1686–1691 (elected unopposed in 1686; elected in regular election in 1688)
- Karl Bildemann, 1691–1694 (elected 1691)

- Jørgen Petersen, 1696–1706 (elected 1696, 1698, 1702)
- Frederik Renvald, 1706–1714 (elected 1706, 1710)
