The Durge were an alien race who, many thousands of years ago, enslaved the ancient people of Normark. Experimenting with the relatively primitive humans, they instilled them with exceptional longevity, superior physical strength and mental acuity. They were eventually driven off by their own creations, the race that became known as the Norse. Today, the descendants of these people now inhabit Normark, Ostland, Elwynn and, to a small degree, Zeed. This lore has led to a well-justified culture of xenophobia amongst all the kin of the Norse.
Arrival
The exact time and date of their arrival on Micras is largely unknown. Only ancient, difficult to translate records and verbal lore remain from that period. It is believed, however, that it was roughly between 3,500 and 4,000 years ago.
Experimentation on Humans
No records exist of any Durge every procreating with Humans, instead they used eugenics, advanced technology and other methods to attempt to breed a race of super soldiers and workers for unknown purposes. They regarded the humans as totally inferior, base creatures. Through their experimentation they did succeed in breeding humans with enhanced physical and mental traits. It was the enhanced strength of the humans that eventually proved to be the downfall of the Durge.
