Gerenian Ice Hockey League (Gerenian: Leran Hokyŷeles Gherenies) is a semi-professional ice hockey league composed of ten teams in Gerenia. It is run by the SHŶG (Gerenian Ice Hockey Association).
History
The League was founded in late 2012 by the then Gerenian Hockey National Commission in order to develop ice hockey in Gerenia. Soon afterwards, eight teams applied for membership, which was granted to all during December. The first season was announced to take place in 2013, from March to September.
The first League champions were HC Stentor as they defeated Standard Victoria in the Final game. Dínamo Tawlkar won the League title in the 2014 season, and managed to successfully defend the title in 2015. The 2015 season saw the inclusion of a ninth team, Alfa-Nekal, and in 2016, Merbet Sargaflus joined the league.
Format
The season commences in August and ends in April of the following year. Games are usually played on Saturday or Sunday. Teams nominally play each of their eight opponents in the league four times for a total of 32 regular season games.
The four best teams qualify for the playoffs, which consist on a two-legged semi-final (1st v 4th, 2nd v 3rd), and a single-game final held in a neutral venue.
