The Jarl of Varmland is the chief executive of Varmland. Elected by the people of Varmland for four-year terms, though until 1694 they were three-year term. If there is a death or resignation of the Jarl during their term, then a new election is held to fill the position for the remainder of that term. This has occurred due to resignations in 1686, 1696, 1721, and twice in 1732, and due to death, once, in 1744.
