The Battenberg family is a noble, rich and powerful Walstädter family. It formerly controlled the lordship of Schneedünen and holds business interests in many parishes across the principality.

The Battenberg was from the early 1700s considered part of the Order of the Holy Lakes. In late 1730, the Order of the Holy Lakes announced that, following an investigation, it had found that Karl Battenberg had fraudulently designed a family tree that derived, via his mother, its ancestry from Vali Ri av Silmahamnum, with the intent of buying his family more power and prestige. Following this investigation, the Order removed the Battenberg family from the Almanac of the Holy Lakes. If Karl Battenberg ever entered Hurmu, he would be arrested for fraud. Other members of the family who removed from the register of membership in the Order were, however, allowed to keep their Hurmu nationality.
