History
The dependency of Lucerne was founded in mid-2012 by Mercurian traders wanting to set up trading links with North Antarctica.
Politics
Lucerne elects a 40 member Lucerne Council, which sends two members, a Governor and Deputy Governor, to the Mercury Parliament.
Geography
The island is located just off the northern coast of North Antarctica, inside the southern ice sheet. The city of Lucerne is located towards the north of the island. Three other small towns are in the south, Charon, Nix and Hydra.
Science
The main scientific centre on the island is the observatory at Nix, an outpost of the University of Mercury. The observatory studies the Aurora Australis, frequently observed in the area, and most of the southern skies, unseen from Mercury.
Transport
Lucerne connects to North Antarctica via the Lucerne Airport. Only two planes a day travel to and from the island. More frequently is the Charon Hovercraft, which runs every half an hour from Charon on the south of the island.
Culture
Lucerne's culture is mainly based on social gatherings after market trading is finished. Some citizens enjoy playing football, with the island having two clubs.
