The Federal Innovation Foundation (Alexandrian: Fondation Fédérale de l'Innovation; Martino: Fondación Federal de Innovación; Wechua: Musuq Ruray Yanapakuy), or FIF, is a research funding agency of the Department of Research and Development in Nouvelle Alexandrie, responsible for funding the development of high-priority and emerging technologies. It was created in 1700 AN by President Seydlitz for the purpose of unifying investment in high-risk, high-reward technologies.

The FIF is independent of the Federal Science & Research Council, but collaborates extensively with the FSRC to harmonize funding and programmes. Unlike the FSRC, the FIF operates largely autonomously from the Department of Research and Development.

The FIF is headed by a Director-General, who also leads the executive team. FIF works exclusively with programme directors, as opposed to the FSRC, which is divided into Domains. The FIF also has a board of directors consisting of eight non-executive directors and a representative from the Department of Research and Development. It also has multiple advisors from across the world.

As of 1730 AN, its annual budget stood at around NAX€25 billion, with about 30% spent on AI and robotics research alone.

Programmes

In 1738 AN, the Frontera Program restructured in part the funding streams and programs of FIF, focusing more on life sciences, biotechnology, and AI. Since then, programs under FIF have been classified into two categories: Insignia (flagship programs), which are the multi-effort programs under FIF; and Ciencia Frontera (frontier science). In 1740 AN, these included:

  • Horizon Vivo: an advanced biotechnology program that researches innovative applications in genomics, bioengineering, and medicine.
  • Mente Mecánica: an advanced computing and robotics program to research and develop innovative AI and machine learning models, develop advanced robotics, and research applications for human-machine interfacing.
  • Clima Nexo: an advanced climate science program to research and develop methods of detecting and predicting climate change for medium- and long-term applications, including for resilience and climate adaptation.
  • Soberana: an advanced aerospace research program to develop and operate next-generation aerospace and spaceflight capabilities, including autonomous spacecraft operation and orbital infrastructure.
  • Agrofuturo: an advanced agricultural science program to reinvent and develop new methods of food production through plant genetics, biotechnology, precision agriculture, and climate resilience.
  • Medicina de Frontera: an advanced medical research program to develop and commercialize advanced medicine through genomics, precision medicine, biomedical engineering, and AI-assisted diagnostics.
  • Nuevo Mundo: an advanced particle physics program to research and advance fundamental understanding of matter, energy, and the structure of the quantum world through high-energy experimental physics, AI-driven data analysis, and advances in material sciences.
