Tiěyán people can, depending on the sense in which it is used, refer either to:
- residents of the cantons East and West Tieya in Etzeland, regardless of ethnicity, or
- the ethnic group now considered to be native to that same region.
The Tiěyán language distinguishes these senses with significantly overlapping but different terms: Tiěyárén 鐵崖人, the literal translation of "Tiěyán people", refers to the first, geographic sense, while chírén 持人, "Chí people", refers to the second, ethnic sense. This article is concerned mostly with this second sense.
