- In 1587 AN, 63 natural philosophers, cartographers, and navigators were exiled from a mainland empire for publishing treatises that directly contradicted the imperial religion and its cosmology. Basically, everyone went apeshit. Who dares to question the faith of the empire? The authorities did not tolerate it one bit. So they come down hard on all of them to set an example. They all manage to get tipped off and escape. They sail south and settle on a volcanic archipelago that no one else wanted because the eruptions made it really miserable. Think... Dragonstone? Kinda? Anyway - one good thing though: turns out geothermal vents are great for industry and for energy and for... well, doing things... if you're stubborn enough.
- Tavarei is built on five major islands and maybe like a dozen itty bitty ones. Voshari, the capital, sits in the caldera of a dormant volcano. Pelankura is a big commercial hub, and has a deep-water port city that controls most of the trade in the archipelago. Maren Doss, a small island with no permanent civilian population, serves as the judicial capital, choses specifically so the courts would be physically isolated from any political pressure.
- The Government runs through the Grand Council of the Isles. Think of it as a kind of Senate where each island sends one delegate, regardless of population. The other chamber is the Chamber of Pilots, which is elected by proportional representation. The head of state is the High Navigator, a holdover from the founding era when the leader was literally the guy steering the fleet. The First Delegate runs the day-to-day government.
- The currency name comes from the obsidian shards that the original settlers used for barter. The national drink, kalder, is exactly as unpleasant as "fermented kelp wine" sounds, but these people are crazy. They consider it a point of pride that they drink it. The basalt tern is the national bird, nesting exclusively on volcanic rock.
- Don't call them "Tavvies". They really hate that.
- Tavarese - Basically it's a creole language that blends Romance-derived vocabulary with an older "indigenous" Archipelagan grammar. Written form uses the Latin alphabet with a handful of diacritics borrowed from early navigator shorthand, originally used to annotate sea charts.
