San Francisco is a port city in the south of the Wechua Nation, a Region of the Federation of Nouvelle Alexandrie. It lies on the region's southern coast, one of the few points at which the largely inland Wechua Nation reaches open water. Once the largest city of the Caputian state of San Luis, San Francisco passed to the Wechua Nation with the collapse of Caputia; it is one of the Cinque Ports of southern Keltia and the home of the Coastal Wechu.
History
San Francisco was the largest city of San Luis, a state of the Kingdom of Caputia. From 1657 AN the city received the Coastal Wechu, descendants of Wechua deported to western Keltia during the period of Atteran domination, who settled the city and the surrounding coast; Wechu was among the languages of San Luis. Because the Wechua Nation was itself landlocked, its access to the sea ran through San Francisco under an agreement with Caputia, and the opening of a maritime trade route from Punta Santiago to the city in 1683 AN helped sustain the Wechua Restoration. With the collapse of Caputia and that Restoration, San Francisco and the southern coast passed to the Wechua Nation, ending the nation's landlocked status and making the city its principal seaport.[1]
The ex-Shirerithian U-boat "Rustolium" remains in the harbour as a museum ship, a memorial to its extended period of service as the sole submarine available to the Military of the Wechua Nation.
Geography
On the southern coast of the Wechua Nation, near the border with the neighboring Region of Santander, San Francisco is paired with Santurce as one of the region's two southern seaports. The Wechua Nation is the most inland of the Federation's Keltian regions, reaching open water only around Judah in its far west and along this southern coast, so that much of the region's access to the sea, and of its seaborne trade, passes through its two southern ports.
Economy and infrastructure
San Francisco is one of the Cinque Ports, the five major port cities of southern Keltia, whose leaders formed the Confederation of the Cinque Ports in 1694 AN. The city hosts a base of the Keltian Fleet of the Federal Navy, and it is the site of the San Francisco Megaport, a combined air, naval, and terrestrial port built in part on reclaimed land that ranks among the largest ports in Keltia and serves the maritime economy of the Wechua Nation. Under Project Kallpa, the Federation's uranium-nuclear program launched in 1758 AN, the city was named the site of the program's first district-heating pilot, which would pair a compact reactor's power output with seawater desalination.
