The Nexrecad System is a series of coastal fortifications that line parts of the Nova English Coast. The first series of fortifications were completed along the coastline of Eastmoorland in 685AJ where it gained the name Nexrecad coming from the Eastmoorland English phrase for "gunhouse".

History

Following the successful completion of the Eastmoorland fortifications in 685, the Witan under the reign of King Berac II invested heavily in a coastal defence programme to ensure that the coastlines of New Sussex and Southern Burwood were equally defended. By 721AJ 160 additional Nexrecads were completed across the Nova English coast and made an immediate impact on reducing coastal raids from Kampongese ships.

However despite the initial success of the Nexrecads, in 795AJ the Witan began to see the Nexrecad system as an unnecessary burden upon the national budget. This led to the closure of 125 Nexrecads, with the remaining 55 remaining due to being located in key strategic sites.

838AJ marked the first of two major refurbishments of the Nexrecad system, during this period the Nexrecads were linked together with a rail line enabling armoured trains to deliver supplies and provide additional support. In addition to this, artillery systems were updated and in some places replaced for Anti-Ship Missile systems. The final renovation undertaken to the Nexrecad system prior to the Evacuations and the Great Disaster was in 855AJ, in which the fortifications were expanded and reinforced to counter changing global threats.

Following the Evacuations and the Great Disaster the Nexrecad system in New Sussex has mostly been turned over to tourism, with the Mercurian Armed Forces continuing to use some as observation posts. The Nexrecad system on the Eastmoorland coast mostly fell into ruin during this period. However a number of local militias and Diaspora took refuge in these fortifications and maintained them until the re-amalgamation under the Hild Plan.

Currently the Ministry of Defence only actively maintains and staffs five Nexrecads at strategic locations on the coast. Whilst the remainder of the system has been turned over to local tourism trusts or to the People's Militia as observation posts.
