The near abroad (Alexandrian: l'étranger proche; Martino: el extranjero cercano; Wechua: qaylla llaqtakuna) is a geopolitical term used in New Alexandrian foreign policy discourse to describe states and territories adjacent to or near the borders of Nouvelle Alexandrie that are considered within the Federation's sphere of strategic interest. The concept encompasses both recognized sovereign states and ungoverned or semi-governed territories, particularly those vulnerable to instability or state failure. The term gained prominence following the East Keltian Collapse (1736 AN-1738 AN), which created vast power vacuums along the Federation's Keltian frontiers and generated over 10 million refugees. It has since informed defense policy, refugee management, development assistance, and military intervention doctrine, including the Fourth Euran War and subsequent Occupation of Oportia. The Operations and Planning Directorate of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Council maintains classified contingency plans addressing various scenarios involving near abroad states.
